Programme
The one-year LLM programme “Transnational Criminal Justice and Crime Prevention – An International and African Perspective” is housed in the South African-German Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice established at the University of the Western Cape in 2008 (click here to see a photo of archbishop Tutu's speech during the opening ceremony on 2 April 2009). The programme is a co-operative endeavour between the Law Faculties of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and of the University of the Western Cape. It is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in the framework of the African Excellence initiative. It aims at educating African and German students for leading positions at both the national and the international levels.
The programme comprises the modules “Transitional Justice”, “International Criminal Law”, “Combating Organised Crime and Money Laundering”, as well as “Combating Corruption”. The modules are taught at UWC, lectures are delivered by Prof Fernandez, Prof Werle, Dr Koen, and by visiting experts. The programme starts in January every year and lectures begin in February. During the mid-year vacation in June/July, the students travel to Germany for a two-week Summer School at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Students who pass all their modules are awarded their LLM degree in early December.
